Physics major Jennifer Kassel and mathematics and computer science major Jonathan Knighten have received two of the three National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships awarded to UNC Charlotte students for 2015. Both students have found opportunities to conduct hands-on research while also helping others through volunteerism focused on science and technology.

Junior biology major Sarah Whitmire has been named a Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow, one of 201 students honored with this national award for investing in their communities through service, research and advocacy.

SPIE Fellow Glenn Boreman, who is the chair of physics and optical science at UNC Charlotte, has been named the 2015 vice president of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, with his term beginning Jan. 1, 2015.

Craig Ogle, the Charles H. Stone Professor of Chemistry, is the 2014 recipient of the First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. The prestigious award, presented by First Citizens Bank and UNC Charlotte, honors faculty scholarship and intellectual inquiry. Ogle has made an indelible impact on the field of organic chemistry.

In recognition of his efforts to promote diversity, UNC Charlotte Chemistry Professor Daniel Rabinovich received an award from the American Chemistry Society’s Committee on Minority Affairs on Nov. 14.

Yanqing Sun, professor of statistics in UNC Charlotte’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in June was named a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation’s preeminent professional statistical society.

The UNC Charlotte campus and broader community celebrated the accomplishments of mathematics professor Harold Reiter, who recently was honored with the Award for Excellence in Public Service from the UNC Board of Governors. An afternoon reception to mark the distinction was held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 in Robinson Hall.
